Writing this on my iPad, using Justin’s keyboard. We’re at his place and it is the first weekend back from our Vacation from Torino and Whistler. Both get aways are pretty local since we’re still in the middle of a pandemic. It doesn’t look like COVID-19 is going anywhere any time soon.
The trip to Tofino was in celebration of Ferd’s 30th birthday. Their group of friends are at that age where contact sports is getting a little rough on the body, so Golf has become their latest and greatest hobby. So it was an easy choice to book a camp ground that also doubled as a golf course.
A drive to Tsawwassen, a ferry ride, and a few hours of winding roads we finally made it to Long Beach Golf Course and Campground. I honestly can’t remember the last time I went camping. Actually now that I think about it, it was probably at the start of my relationship with Justin in 2017. We camped with my cousins for one night, more so because that’s all Justin could handle. He’s more of the glamping type. So staying in Tofino for two nights was a bit of a struggle for him.
While the guys hit the course us ladies, plus Mike decided to chase some sun. Trekking out to Cox beach, only to find that it wasn’t the tanning type of beach we were hoping. A lot of surfers, chasing ocean cold waves, covered by a mist and clouds. Bright, but not sunny. We played music, ate snacks, started telling scary stories and made the most of it.
We figured the guys would be done soon, and we also started to get hungry so we headed back to camp. Alas, the sun came through, drinks were poured, and we.took in all the vitamin D we could get. Slowly teams were coming.
Successful trip for the group. My first one with them really. With only one night back in Vancouver, Justin and I headed for Whistler the next day.
Although we have been together for three years now, Whistler was really our first real trip alone together. We have gone to Chicago, Los Angeles, Kelowna, and most recently Tofino, but those were either work or group trips. So I was really looking forward to it.
A year ago my gift to him for our anniversary was to experience the Scandinave Spa along with a massage. Honestly, I think we both forgot about it. With this chance, I finally decided to book it for both of us. First night there, that’s what we did. Actually he took me shopping first and then we went to the spa. Not only were we celebrating our three years, but it also landed on my Birthday.
Our second day had a little more plans. Of course Justin wanted to hit up a range. It was kind of perfect that our hotel had an incentive for us to use the Fairmont Driving Range for free. An absolutely stunning view between mountains, no city to be seen, and for most of our time up there we had it to our selves. Major video and photo op.
After the range we went to grab some lunch in the village. Aimed for a patio and Earls was the closest in sight. We looked into going for a bike ride or hike but we were on a shorter time frame and honestly were getting a little tired. Adult naps are key, especially after so much sun. So we planned on staying in the hotel, and I took advantage of the bath.
My perception of time kind of went out the window, so I was falling behind on getting ready for dinner. Our reservation at 6 for Araxi was cutting close, but we made it. Started off with some wine, and oysters (what I was really craving). Shared some beef carpaccio, and closed with the Sable fish. Something Justin has never tried, so his reaction for how good it tasted was priceless. He also thought he wasn’t going to get full from our food, but that took him by surprise as well. Would 100 percent recommend and come back.
Our final day was a bit of a messy morning. Justin had an experience booked at 5pm, but we had to check out at 10am. We had no plans, so we made them up on the spot. We would pack up, grab lunch, go mini golfing, book some time at the Scandinave (for the second time), which is where we would get ready and then head to the experience. Which was a surprise to head to Bearfoot Ketel One Ice Room. We experienced tasting vodka at a temperature of negative 40, which reduces the alcohol burn and enhances the flavours.
I came in hungry, and left drunk all in the span of fifteen minutes.
Driving back so quickly didn’t seem like a smart idea, so we went back to mini-put to finish our game and then continued to head home.
Best (and only) vacation yet hahaha.
Until there is a vaccine for the Rona, we’ll have to just think about where we want to go next. I know I still want to travel to Europe, and Justin would like to go to Japan. Hopefully those will be the next two in the near future.
